The balance sheet provides a 'snapshot' of an organization at a particular point in time. It indicates the organization's financial strength, providing information about what the it owns (assets), what it owes (liabilities), and the 'book value' of the business. Ratio analysis can also be performed on the balance sheet in order to gain valuable insight into the organization's performance.

This tutorial introduces the various elements that make up a balance sheet and shows where these are positioned on the balance sheet itself. It also discusses consolidated balance sheets (the balance sheet of a group of businesses), before concluding with balance sheet ratio analysis.
