When the providers of liquidity (lenders, counterparties, suppliers) become severely concerned that a company will run out of cash, they tend to cut off credit, and a bankruptcy is often the result. This was the case with the collapse of Enron back in 2002 and more recently the demise of Bear Stearns in 2008. This tutorial looks at the importance of cash flow to a business and the different business activities that generate and use this cash flow. Two case studies are provided to show how a company’s historical cash flow statements can be used to predict future free cash flow and debt capacity.
