Business Finance CPD Online Course Description

Financial Authorities (UK)

Financial Authorities (UK)
Objectives
On completion of this tutorial, you will be able to:

- outline the shortcomings of the tripartite system of regulation
- describe the role played by the Bank of England in ensuring monetary and financial stability
- explain the function of the three new regulatory authorities, namely the FPC, the PRA, and the FCA

Tutorial Overview
The 2007-09 financial crisis exposed some serious deficiencies in the UK’s regulatory regime. In order to address the deficiencies, the government committed to fundamental reform of the framework for financial regulation. This reform involved disbanding the tripartite system of regulation and the Financial Services Authority (FSA), and establishing a new regime of more specialized and focused regulators with the Bank of England positioned at the center of the framework for preserving financial stability.

This tutorial looks at the tripartite system of regulation and the weaknesses in this regime that were exposed by the financial crisis. It also describes the new regulatory framework, including the role played by the three new financial authorities – the Financial Policy Committee (FPC), the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
